This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

St Mary’s R.C. Primary School provides a safe learning environment in which many pupils feel well cared for and happy. A majority of pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. A few enjoy their leadership responsibilities and have helped to make improvements to the school, such as making choices about outdoor play equipment. Overall, the attendance of pupils is too low, and leaders do not undertake rigorous enough actions to address this. The school has had a prolonged period of instability in leadership and teaching, with many staff changes. The acting headteacher has undertaken this role for the last seven years. This instability has had a significant impact on the school’s ability to address important shortcomings in their provision. Leaders have started to make improvements, including the appointment of new members of the governing body and the implementation of a positive behaviour policy. However, there are still significant shortcomings in the way leaders address important weaknesses in the school’s work, and the rate of improvement is too slow. In nearly all classes, teaching does not ensure that pupils make strong progress. As a result, pupils do not always achieve the standards of which they are capable, particularly the more able. In addition, staff do not always ensure that they provide pupils with stimulating and authentic learning experiences. They do not take into account the views of pupils about what and how they would like to learn well enough. The provision to support pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) is generally effective. Staff identify pupils’ needs at an early stage and put in place suitable plans to help address their individual needs.

St Mary's R.C. Primary School (Carmarthen) Parent Reviews

Average Parent Rating

“Very good school”

St. Mary's is a good school, the teachers are hard working, enthusiastic and fair to pupils. In my opinion, there is very good communication between teachers, parent and pupils. I highly recommend St. Mary's.
