School Description

Advanced Education-Essex School is an independent day special school located in the semi-rural area of Takeley, near Dunmow. It opened in September 2008 and had its first inspection in October 2009. Since March 2012, it has been under new ownership and is now part of Advanced Education, itself part of Advanced Childcare Ltd. A new headteacher took up his post in March 2012. The school is registered for up to 12 students aged from 11 to 16 years who have behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. There are currently five students on roll, aged from 13 to 16 years, who have experienced considerable disruption in their education prior to joining the school. Of these, three have a statement of special educational needs and some have moderate learning difficulties. Some students present very challenging behaviour on entry to the school and have been permanently excluded from other schools. Four students are looked after by their local authorities. One student is on dual placement with another school. Most students live in homes run by the proprietors. All students speak English as their principal language. The school aims to ‘equip all young people to contribute effectively to society by developing social maturity, moral values, respect, and academic knowledge and skills.’ Evaluation of the school Advanced Education–Essex School has made significant improvements since its first inspection and now provides a good quality of education and meets its aims. The staff work hard together and in close partnerships with parents, carers and outside agencies to re-engage students in their education, which is reflected in good attendance patterns. Students make good progress in their personal development and basic skills owing to a broad and balanced curriculum and improved teaching and assessment. Their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is good and so is their behaviour. Safeguarding arrangements are robust and the school makes good provision for students’ welfare, health and safety. The school meets all of the regulations for independent schools.
