School Description

Alban City School is smaller than the average-sized primary school. It opened in September 2012, having registered with the Department for Education as a non-maintained free-school academy to take a maximum of 420 pupils. The school currently has pupils in Reception and Year 1. It will accept pupils into Year 2 from September 2014, building by one year group a year until it has classes from Reception to Year 6 by September 2018. The proportion of disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs supported at school action is well below the national average. The proportion supported at school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs is also well below average. The proportion of pupils supported through the pupil premium is well below the national average and represents only a very small number of pupils. The pupil premium is additional funding for specific groups of pupils such as those known to be eligible for free school meals and children in local authority care. The proportion of pupils from minority ethnic groups is below average. The proportion of pupils who speak a first language other than English is above average. Pupils speak 19 different home languages. A small but increasing number are at the early stages of learning English. There is on-site pre-school provision. This is not managed by the governing body and was inspected separately in December 2013.

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the last School Census (released annually in July).

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the last School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.

Alban City School Reviews

Average Rating:

“Great school”
"> Great school with a great Head. My children are very happy there. My only criticism is the Church of England focus. For a supposedly non-religious school, there is a lot of focus on religion. They could at least balance it out by teaching about humanism, but the governing body claim this is too complicated.
“Wonderful city school”
"> Fantastic school! My two children are very happy here.
“No where”
"> I get the impression this school is just interested in ticking their Ofsted boxes to make them look good on paper. In my experience as a parent, they turn a blind eye on difficult children's behaviour. A few of my friends have withdrawn their children. Great school with good staff but other minor issues if not fixed can turn major.
