Alice Stevens is a 160 place school for students aged 11-19 years. All students have a statement of special educational needs in respect of their learning difficulties. The range of ability and complexity of needs of students attending the school has increased significantly and a large majority of the students have additional needs, mainly attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, autistic spectrum conditions, behavioural, emotional and social difficulties, sensory impairments and minor physical disabilities. Students come from across Coventry; two thirds are boys and at present 41% of the students are from ethnic minority backgrounds, which is above average. The proportion of students who speak English as an additional language is average. Over half the students are eligible for the pupil premium which is well above the national average. The pupil premium is an additional sum of money provided by the government to support the achievement of certain groups of students, such as those who are in the care of the local authority and those known to be eligible for free school meals. The sixth form department has a good partnership with Hereward College and the Supported Employment Service to develop clear links from school to college. There has been a 40% turnover of teaching staff in the last twelve months. The support staff have remained stable and consistent; there have also been significant changes to the senior leadership team of the school. The governing body was disbanded in July 2013 and in September 2013 a new governing body with significant educational experience and expertise was convened to support and challenge the school.
