The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Pupils at this school have very positive relationships with school staff. They have confidence in them. They know that staff are there to keep them safe, and that they will help them with any worries they have. There are high expectations for every pupil at this school across the subjects taught. All children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), now get off to an excellent start with their reading. This is enabling them to access the ambitious new curriculum that leaders have introduced. Pupils understand the ‘learning for life’ values of ‘eloquence, grit, responsibility, confidence, kindness and curiosity’. Pupils know why these values are important, and how they will help them succeed now and into the future. Staff are unwavering in their expectation that every pupil will live by these values and follow classroom rules. Classrooms are calm and settled, and learning is now very rarely disrupted by behaviour. If bullying is identified, staff act swiftly and effectively to address it. Parents recognise that staff provide children and their families with a high level of support. There is, for example, a weekly drop-in counselling service that pupils and parents can access.

“Friendly local primary”

unlock
"> Our nearest school, fairly standard local primary, now run by Ark, a takeover which was fiercely opposed by the majority of parents and the community. My children have both been happy at Castledown, one is still there. There have been a lot of changes in staffing and routines which have made it a bit unsettled. Communication is not always the best. However, the teachers are kind and caring, the children generally make good progress and are well looked after. There are regular art shows which parents are invited to. Both my children have enjoyed violin lessons since KS 1 and played in orchestras through the county music service. The lockdown educational provision was very good, plenty of work sent home which did not all require computers, teachers phoned home, and completed work was celebrated. Each day a teacher reading a story was shared on Facebook. I would recommend this school if you live on the West Hill in Hastings, but I would not bother travelling far for it!
“Ark Castledown”

"> My child loves the school. He settled well and adapted from Little Ridge – another Ark school which is close with Castledown. He easily made friends.
