The school is a larger than the average-sized middle school. The large majority of the students are from White British backgrounds. About a fifth are from a range of minority ethnic backgrounds. Some of these pupils, about 4%, speak English as an additional language. The proportion of disabled students and those who have special educational needs supported through school action is in line with the national average. The proportion supported at school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs is below average. The proportion of students for whom the school receives the pupil premium is below the national average. The pupil premium is additional government funding for children in the care of the local authority and students known to be eligible for free school meals. The school meets the government’s current floor standards, which set the minimum expectations for the attainment and progress of students by the end of Year 6. The current headteacher took up post, initially in an acting role and later as the permanent headteacher, very shortly after the last inspection.
