This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Baden Powell Primary School is an inner-city school serving the area of Tremorfa on the south side of Cardiff city centre. This is designated as a Community First area by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG). The school provides education for pupils between three and 11 years of age. Most pupils enter the school in the term after their third birthday. The intake of pupils represents the full ability range, but many have lower than average levels of basic skills. Pupils are taught through the medium of English. Welsh is taught as a second language. Currently there are 355 pupils on roll, including 32 nursery pupils who attend part-time. Approximately 44% of pupils are entitled to free school meals and around a half of pupils come from homes that are economically disadvantaged. Approximately 27% of pupils have special educational needs (SEN), including six pupils with a statement of SEN. About 31% of pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds representing over 16 different home languages, with English as an additional language. This is a significant increase since the last inspection. All other pupils are from English-speaking homes. Five pupils are ‘looked after children’ (LAC) and are cared for by the local authority. No pupils were excluded in the last year. Since the last inspection in 2004, pupil numbers have decreased from 449 and the number of classes has reduced by two. A new headteacher was appointed in April 2010, following a period of acting headship at the school from September 2009. The senior leadership team (SLT) currently includes an acting deputy headteacher and an acting Foundation Phase co-ordinator. The 2010-2011 individual school budget per pupil for Baden Powell Primary School is £3,269 which compares with a maximum of £14,067 and a minimum of £2,787 for primary schools in Cardiff. The school has the 65th highest budget per pupil out of the 116 primary schools in Cardiff.
