School Description

Bramdean is a non-selective independent school in Heavitree, Exeter. Founded in 1901, it provides education for children in line with its registration for pupils between the ages of three and 18 years. The majority of pupils are of White British background. A very small number speak English as an additional language. The proportion of pupils with SEND, including those with an EHC plan, is very small. The school currently has no pupils who are disadvantaged (eligible for free school meals or children looked after). Children in the early years are taught in the kindergarten, which includes the Nursery Inspection report: Bramdean School, 15–17 January 2019 Page 9 of 12 Year through to Year 1 pupils. The school has a sixth form for a few students. The school does not use any other alternative provision for any of its pupils. It does not usually enter pupils early for external examinations or national curriculum end-of-keystage assessments.

“Wonderful, dedicated head and staff”

"> A wonderful, caring and first class school. Children are put into classes depending on their ability and not age which works really well. The staff are highly qualified in their individual subjects and the children get a lot of one to one attention due to the small class sizes. My son was at Bramdean from age 3 to 17; I cannot recommend the school more highly.
“Dedicated school”

"> Excellent school - small and very flexible. Staff highly qualified and dedicated. Something a bit different in their approach that really suits my children.
“Great little school”

"> Bramdean offers an all-round education to rival the best. The mixture of small class sizes (<12) and very good teachers provide a well behaved, yet supportive environment. Academic achievement is important, but not the only aim. They look to produce well-rounded, well-mannered children who will progress well in life. The school buildings are historic and elegant, but inside you will find well equipped science and computer labs, and classrooms with old-fashioned desks. It gives the children a mix of the best of the old and the new. The small class sizes mean that discipline is much easier to maintain, and there is no hiding at the back! All children are encouraged to get involved, and they seem to be able to deal equally well with the high achievers and those who struggle. Moving our daughter to this school was the best move we could have made.

"> The fees are low and the standard of education, facilities and pastoral care reflect this. The classes have several different age groups within it, due to the low pupil numbers, which, in my opinion, affects the child's social and academic development.
