School Description

Bryn Primary School is in the village of Bryn between Port Talbot and Maesteg. Most pupils live locally. The school currently has 51 full-time pupils from reception to Year 6 plus seven parttime nursery children, all taught in three mixed age classes. The number on roll, which consistently contains more boys than girls, continues to fall. Approximately 22% of pupils are eligible to receive free school meals and the school identifies that around 37% have additional learning needs. Both of these figures are above national averages. A very few pupils have a statement of special educational needs or come from an ethnic minority background. No pupils speak English as an additional language, use Welsh as a first language or are looked after by the local authority. The school was last inspected in November 2007. During the current inspection, the headteacher, who was appointed in January 2008, was on sick leave and the deputy headteacher had just begun a phased return to work. As a result, an acting headteacher had been brought in by the local authority after half-term and two of the three classes were taught by temporary teachers, supported by a local authority representative. The individual school budget per pupil for Bryn Primary School in 2013-2014 means that the budget is £5,047 per pupil. The maximum per pupil in the primary schools in Neath Port Talbot is £8,492 and the minimum is £2,668. Bryn Primary School is sixth out of the 70 primary schools in Neath Port Talbot in terms of its school budget per pupil.
