School Description

Canterbury Steiner School is a non-selective, independent co-educational day school for pupils aged three to seventeen years old, situated in the rural area of Chartham near Canterbury. The school was founded in 1976 and is a registered charity governed by a board of trustees. Its educational practice is inspired and influenced by the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner and expressed through the Steiner Waldorf curriculum. There are currently 161 pupils on role. The school is organised into two Kindergartens with children of three to six years, including an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) setting, a Lower School with pupils from seven to thirteen years (Class 8), and an Upper School with pupils from fourteen to seventeen years (Classes 9 to 11). No pupil has a statement of special educational need. The school has exemption from the reading and writing elements of literacy and from the completion of the EYFS profile. It also has some modifications to other parts of the learning and development requirements of the EYFS, including aspects of communication and language, physical education, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. As a consequence, these aspects were not inspected. The school uses standard Steiner nomenclature for its classes: the Kindergarten contains all children under six years and so includes Nursery, Reception and Year 1; Classes 1 to 11 correspond with national curriculum Years 2 to 12. The school’s last inspection was in November 2011. Summary of main findings: Canterbury Steiner School is successful in maintaining and fostering an harmonious learning community within the framework of the Steiner philosophy where pupils develop the attitudes and values inspired by that philosophy. The quality of education is good and some aspects are outstanding. Provision for the children in the EYFS is outstanding in all respects. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding. Teaching is consistently good and some is outstanding. 3 It ensures a wide range of learning experiences for all pupils through the imaginative interpretation and practice of the Steiner Waldorf themes. As a consequence, pupils of all abilities become effective learners, make good progress and achieve well. Pupils’ behaviour is excellent. The safeguarding of pupils is given a high priority, pastoral care is excellent, and provision for welfare, health and safety is good. Pupils of all ages say they love coming to school. They feel safe, valued as individuals and believe their teachers care about them and work hard for them to succeed. The small proportion of parents who responded to the pre-inspection questionnaire is wholeheartedly supportive of the school and of the education it provides for the children. The school meets all but two of the regulatory requirements. The school has maintained the good provision found at the time of the last inspection and has successfully addressed the minor issues raised about leadership and management in the Kindergarten. What the school does well:  it provides an excellent foundation for children in the Kindergarten;  it develops strong, trusting relationships between adults and pupils throughout the school, and  it encourages pupils’ aesthetic appreciation and achievement, particularly in the creative arts.
