The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

“Highly recommended”

"> A village school set in rural Devon, Culmstock Primary is very much part of the community. Like most schools it is up against real funding issues but, with a solid team of staff, and with the support of the parents, it maintains an excellent learning environment. Although it has a ‘good’ Ofsted rating as demonstrated in the figures above, personally I am not interested in government targets and national averages. At this young age I am more concerned in the personal development of my children. During their primary education I would like my children to be engaged in their learning, to be polite and well-mannered, to have strong interpersonal skills both with children and adults alike, to be have a large network of friends and above all to be allowed to be children and have fun! The staff at Culmstock are helping me to achieve this (it is a team effort, the teachers can’t do it all by themselves!). Both my children adore going to this school and they have a great respect for their teachers. I am confident that Culmstock Primary will continue to enrich my children so that when they reach secondary education they will have the required life skills and knowledge to fulfill their academic potential.
“"Friendly, happy environment"”

unlock
"> All of my children are either currently pupils of Culmstock Primary or have recently completed their primary education here. We have found this school to be a very friendly and happy environment, where our children thrive, are eager to attend and make great friendships. The school is small and caring. The teachers are supportive and enthusiastic. My children feel safe and are very happy, so enjoy their learning and are able to reach their full potential. This is a great school in our eyes!
“Happy School”

"> I am a parent of three children who have been/are still going through this school. Above all, I have found this to be a school where the children feel safe and happy. My children have experienced some outstanding teaching and a broad spectrum of educational and extra-curricular activities. Individual needs are highlighted early on and given the support necessary for success. I think this is a great environment for children to spend their formative primary years. I have seen the progress my own children have made, both emotionally and educationally, and would thoroughly recommend it.
“Great school”

unlock
"> I am a parent of a child who has been at this school since reception. Children are engaged in their learning, there is a real emphasis on all year groups supporting each other and looking out for each other. As with all schools there are children with specific needs in terms of learning assistance and behavioural issues, and the school works hard alongside parents to make sure that those needs are met without affecting the whole class. This is a small village school which is up against real funding issues like most schools, but by engaging with parents and with the parents working alongside the school and supporting it, instead of trying to work against it, Culmstock is a great primary school. My child has been happy here throughout her primary education, and any issues that have arisen have been dealt with effectively.
“Chaotic, unhappy and academically unsatisfactory”

unlock
"> I was a parent at this school until very recently. It had a good reputation which I found completely unfounded. The atmosphere within the classroms is chaotic and lacks discipline. The teachers seem unable or unwilling to clamp down on unruly and nasty behaviour. In my opinion, there is a far too much emphasis on SEN (there seems to be a large % of children with special needs) which was clearly leaving the school hamstrung when it came to dealing with any disruption. Very large class sizes are hampering learning, school buildings that are bursting at the seams and are in bad condition. Lunch is held in the village hall across the road (not safe, given the behaviour of some children). Not a happy school. If you want somewhere for your child to feel safe, well-educated and cared for, this is not the place for you.
“Bad premises and bad communication. Slow progress.”

unlock
"> I am a parent. This used to be a good school. Now there is poor communication with parents. The children's emotional and social needs are not recognised from year 1-6. Academic progress is slow. Small classrooms and playgrounds. School building lets in water when it rains. Mixed year group classes where friends may be separated. Children have to cross a road to go to lunch and assembly.
