Independent preparatory schools do not have to follow the National Curriculum or submit test results to the Department for Education so there is no individual school performance data or star rating.

Visit the school's website to learn more about their unique curriculum, policies on testing and common leaver destinations (a good indicator of pupil progress). See our About page for information on Choosing A Prep School.

School Description

Duncombe School is Hertford’s only co-educational Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep school for children aged 2-11. In 2014, we were rated “Outstanding” in all areas by the School Inspection Service. We strive to provide a vibrant and happy environment where pupils feel safe and secure, but are willing to be challenged and stretched. We have an excellent heritage of preparing children for the rigorous entrance tests of selective secondary schools, and all of our recent Year 6 pupils received offers from their first choice school.

LEARNING THROUGH NATURE

At Duncombe School we value the benefits of children learning in a range of environments. We are an accredited Forest School, allowing us to offer outdoor education and activities to our Early Years.

Forest School allows children to learn and explore in a safe outdoor environment. The Dell, our large sunken woodland area that was once the house's sunken garden in Victorian times, makes the perfect location for lessons designed to develop the children's curiosity, confidence, self-esteem, creativity, communication skills, knowledge of the natural environment and the ability to assess risk.

From Kindergarten through to age 11 the children have access to activities what range from den building to going on bug hunts. Lessons are carefully planned to teach children problem-solving, teamwork and how to handle risk, all whilst learning about the natural environment.
