School Description

This is a very small village primary school. There are two classes comprising of Reception/Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. During the day, pupils in Key Stage 2 attended a rehearsal for a dance festival. The closure of Joint Force Harrier Cottesmore in 2011 has led to a decline in the number on roll. Most pupils are of White British heritage and the vast majority speak English as their first language. The proportion of pupils known to be eligible for the pupil premium (additional money to support those pupils known to be eligible for free school meals) is lower than the national average. The proportions of disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs supported through school action is above average. The proportion supported at school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs is also above average. The school meets the current government floor standards, which set the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress. The governing body is currently in the process of appointing a permanent headteacher.

“Small but super... go and see for yourself!”

"> Gosh, looking at this lowest ranking for the Rutland area you would think that this school was not worth driving to Exton to see! What a hidden gem you would miss. My two very different children go to this school where they are both equally happy. I believe they are thriving because the school is small enough for their individual needs to be known and supported and their strengths celebrated. Regardless of gender or age, the small number of pupils play and work well together. There are plenty of leadership opportunities for the older children, which mine really appreciate. The curriculum is well planned to cater for the mixed age/ability classes and I regularly hear what they have been learning about, which to me, is a key indicator of engaged learning. The homework set is fun and my children are motivated by their element of choice. The school has great wrap around care which mine ask to go to even if I don't need them to be there. It's also working hard to encourage the children to develop good learning habits and above all, as a concerned parent, I'm grateful that I can approach the class or head teacher with any query I may have and know it will be dealt with professionally and competently. If you live in this area, do not hesitate to go and visit this enclave set amidst the rolling, green hills to see some happy, self-assured children learning so much more than just how to pass a test.
