This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Pupils enjoy attending this small school. They say how much it has improved in recent months. They told me that the best things about this school are their friends and kind teachers. Pupils feel safe and well cared for. They appreciate the pastoral care that they receive. Any pupil who feels anxious or worried can visit the school’s ‘Flourish’ department. They say how well staff listen to and act on their concerns. Most pupils behave well and have positive attitudes to their learning. But, in some key stage 2 classes, low-level disruption can affect pupils’ learning. Pupils play happily together. They say that bullying rarely happens at this school. Parents speak highly of the school and would recommend it to others. Parents whose children attend the specially resourced provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are pleased with the care their child receives. Pupils make gains in their speech and language skills due to staff expertise. There are growing expectations for every child. Reading is strong throughout the school. In some subjects, pupils do not learn as well as they should.

“The best of all things - small and thoroughly inclusive”

unlock
"> A small school by today's standards that really cares about the development of its pupils. I have seen the amazing progress this school has made first hand with one daughter just leaving the school after many amazing years and another just starting her journey. Holtspur staff really care about the progress your child makes both academically and emotionally. It nurtures new starters and supports through buddying and teaching. Sports, drama, dance, singing are all encouraged and there's lots of opportunity for the kids to get involved. I would recommend this school to anyone looking.
“Lovely local school”

"> I have two children at Holtspur School (one just starting) and am really delighted with it. The atmosphere of the school is warm and friendly, with strong relationships developing between staff, children and parents. In particular, children in the higher years are encouraged to interact with the younger ones by means of a buddy system, which really helps the little ones to feel settled. There are lots of opportunities for the children to expand their learning outside the classroom with the new, PTA funded, Nest room providing a really wonderful facility.
“A wonderful and caring school”

"> When my older daughter started at Holtspur, she was a very shy girl, that barely dared talk to adults other that close family. With help of the amazing staff in the school she has developed into a much more confident girl (just started year 6), that is still a little reluctant to speak in front of too many people, but happy to sing solos in front of the whole school and participate in plays. The caring and inclusive ethos in the school caters for children of every ability and gets the best out of every child. Our younger daughter has just started in reception and we cannot recommend the school enough.
“What a wonderful school!!”

"> Holtspur is an amazing school, I have seen the school and my children flourish over the past 7 years, due to the hard work and caring of all the staff. Any concerns I have ever had have been responded to quickly and efficiently. My children have loved going to Holtspur. They are confident, secure and happy individuals, who make the most of all the opportunities the school offers them. I would thoroughly recommend Holtspur School to anyone wondering where their children should go to school!
“Indifferent attitude to those who are not natural achievers”

unlock
"> There is much to recommend Holtspur School. However, in my opinion, there is a persistent failure to create a secure environment for those children who don't naturally rise to the top of the pile either academically or on the sports field. The school was not designed to take so many children, resulting in 32 year 5 & 6s being squeezed into classrooms designed for 30 seven-year-olds. The pressure cooker environment which is created allows fractious relationships to develop and the school is far too tolerant of persistent low-level bullying. There is a seeming lack of will to address this problem, and although the school states in its policy documents that it promotes resilience, it actually has no procedures or policies in place to achieve this. If your child is confident, sporty, musical or academic it will be a great school for them. But if they are sensitive or less resilient you would be better off looking elsewhere.
