School Description

Founded in 1827, Loretto is Scotland’s first boarding school. Today an independent boarding and day school, it welcomes just over 500 girls and boys from 3 to 18 years. Set in a safe, leafy 85-acre campus just six miles from Edinburgh, the first thing you notice when you enter Loretto's campus is the warmth and energy of both pupils and staff. Relationships are marked by kindness, care and respect; a truly special environment for providing the confidence and know-how to thrive in life after Loretto. Following the English curriculum of GCSEs, A-Levels, and more recently, BTECs, more than nine pupils out of ten achieve places at their chosen onwards destination—many attending top universities such as, Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Newcastle, and Durham, as well as American universities. With its superb location on Scotland's Golf Coast, Loretto also has a strong tradition of top-level golf. The School's Golf Academy is regarded as one of Europe's leading golf academies where pupils can develop their sporting talent in tandem with an exceptional education. Ultimately, to really understand the warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes Loretto different, you have to experience the School in person. So please come along for a visit—you will soon see why our pupils are so proud to be called Lorettonians.

“Avoid this school”

I am a divorced father and my son now 17 attended Loretto school. While his primary schooling was quite good and he was progressing, the secondary schooling has been a great disappointment. The school, although located in Scotland, follows the English education system. Something I always thought strange. My son has now attempted GCSEs three times and has failed the lot on each occasion. I had spent eighteen months up to the commencement of these exams writing, phoning and emailing the headmaster pointing out how my son’s reports grades were spiralling down and how we need to meet to discuss this and how it may be rectified with no result or even an answer. In my opinion, this is a very expensive school but the result is that my son will enter the world poorly prepared with no qualifications just the firm belief that as a ‘Lorettian’ he is superior.
