School Description

Nunnykirk is a smaller than average-sized special school. The school is located in a Grade I listed building in rural Northumberland, approximately 10 miles from the nearest town. The school supports children from a large geographical area. All pupils are transported to and from school. Most travel on home-to-school transport provided by their local authority. A few pupils are brought to school by their parents or carers. All pupils have special educational needs and/or disabilities as a result of their specific learning difficulties. These are primarily dyslexia. An increasing number of pupils are joining the school with additional learning difficulties, including autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. All pupils have an education, health and care plan. Since the previous inspection, there have been significant changes in the school’s leadership team. A new headteacher and deputy headteacher were appointed in September 2018. In addition, there have been changes to the membership of the governing body. A new chair of the governing body was appointed in September 2018. Inspection report: Nunnykirk Centre for Dyslexia, 8–9 May 2019 Page 8 of 11 Following the previous inspection, the school no longer offers boarding provision. In addition, the school’s sixth-form provision has been suspended. All pupils are of White British heritage. The proportion of pupils entitled to receive pupil premium is slightly below the national average. The school does not use any alternative education provision. There is no statutory requirement for non-maintained schools to publish information on a school website. Since the previous inspection, the school has developed a website. The school’s policies, including the safeguarding policy, are made available to parents online. The school has not published a prospectus. As a result, the school does not meet the publication requirements for non-maintained schools.

Average Parent Rating

“Fantastic school with a very caring and calm atmosphere. All the kids here are so happy!”

Brilliant school with the best teachers, who have years of experience teaching dyslexic kids. My son has improved not only with his education (after mainstream school failed him, he could barely write or read) but also he is brimming with confidence that I thought we would never see again! Highly recommend this school!
“Outstanding school and community”

Absolutely fantastic school. My son has attended for 7 years . Best decision I ever made to send him here.
