Oasis is a small special school that provides full-time education for boys and girls aged between 12 and 16 years. All of the students are resident in accommodation provided by the proprietor. The school was registered in October 2007 but its first students did not arrive until January 2012. This is the school’s first inspection. None of the students currently on the school’s roll has a statement of special educational needs. Students are placed at the school in relation to severe behavioural, emotional and social difficulties and all students are looked after by their local authorities. The school does not use alternative provision to extend its curriculum. The school’s statement of aims includes the following: ‘We offer a caring and stimulating environment for children aged 12 to 16 who have struggled to engage in mainstream school. Oasis School is a stepping stone back into long-term educational provisions.’ What does the school need to do to improve further? Improve leadership and management by: developing effective arrangements to evaluate the school’s performance establishing appropriate plans aimed at improving in students’ achievements monitoring teachers’ performance and supporting them in developing their practice. Improve students’ achievement by: making more effective use of assessment of students’ abilities in planning teaching material ensuring that an appropriate learning environment is always available and used.
