School Description

Rathbone Choices is an independent day pupil referral unit which has been operating since 1999 and is owned by the Rathbone charitable foundation. The school is located in the centre of Huddersfield and occupies two large conjoined houses on a busy street. Rathbone accepts students in Key Stage 4 referred from Kirklees local authority. It is registered for up to 30 students aged from 14 to 16 years of age. Currently, there are 13 boys and 11 girls on roll, four of whom have a statement of special educational needs in respect of behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. Some have other recognised barriers to learning including communication difficulties. Many have had a disrupted experience in their previous educational settings. A very small number are in the care of the local authority and the wide range of ethnic heritages of the students reflects that of the local area. Rathbone provides a very specific service for the local authority by acting as an ‘independent pupil referral unit’. It accommodates students who have exhausted the choices provided in mainstream education and aims to ‘offer a flexible range of education and training programmes designed for young people who are experiencing difficulties in mainstream education’. It was last inspected by Ofsted in June 2008. The proprietors have requested a material change to increase numbers to 38 students. This inspection considered the viability of this request.
