School Description

Rightrack is a non-denominational, independent day special school for students with behavioural, emotional, and social difficulties (BESD) currently located in the Saltley area of Birmingham. The Department for Education database shows the school’s capacity as 20 students, aged 14 to 16 years, although the number admitted is often above this number throughout the year. It opened in 2010. There are currently 20 students on the roll. Five Year 11 students who have been on the roll this year have left the school and it now contains mainly those in Years 9 and 10. The vast majority of students have been excluded from their secondary school or are at risk of exclusion. Two students currently have a statement of special educational needs. All places are paid for by the local authority or secondary schools. Three students are taught separately from the rest of the school, although this group has been larger in the past. These students are learning English as an additional language, although they, too, exhibit difficulties with their behaviour. Students come from a range of backgrounds. Some are White British, Pakistani, Somali, and Romanian. Most students are Muslim. During the time of the inspection, the school day had been shortened considerably to take account of Ramadan. About 50% of students observed the fast. The school’s aims show that it is ‘dedicated to the total development of each child: intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, moral and physical’. The school believes ‘that everyone can learn, become better thinkers and independent learners’. Since the last inspection a number of staff have left and others have joined the school. Although the school opened in September 2008, it was not registered until June 2010. Its first inspection took place in April 2011 when the quality of education and welfare health and safety were judged inadequate. The progress monitoring inspection took place in Nov 2011 when all regulations except one, relating to safeguarding, were met. In October 2013, the school moved into temporary premises on the first floor above a children’s centre. Problems with the previous accommodation meant that the school had to re-locate. The school intends to move permanently into a remodelled building at the end of July 2014. This has yet to be adapted, although plans have been drawn up.
