School Description

Sathya Sai School is an independent day school for boys and girls. It opened in 2001 and is registered for 150 pupils aged three to 16 years. It is located close to the centre of Leicester in a large, listed building. The school uses most of the building but not all of the third floor. There are currently 68 pupils on roll, 15 of whom are in the Early Years Foundation Stage and 26 in Key Stages 1 and 2. The remainder are in Key Stages 3 and 4. There are a small number of mixed-aged classes. Almost all pupils are British with an Indian background and they speak English as their first language. There are a few pupils who have recently arrived from India, Japan and elsewhere with limited English. Seven pupils have been identified by the school as having special educational needs although none, at present, has a statement of special educational needs. These pupils have a wide range of needs including deafness, slow speech and language development, sensory impairment and attention deficit hyperactivity. Support to meet these various needs is provided by staff at the school and a small number of visiting specialists. The education provided by the school is based on the teachings and philosophy of the late Sathya Sai Baba. The resulting curriculum is built around the concepts of ‘right conduct, truth, love, non-violence and peace’. The aim of the school is to develop pupils’ character and virtue through an understanding of these values and to develop pupils’ academic excellence. Most of the teaching takes place in school but regular use is also made of the local Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre and St Mary’s Field. School starts at 8am with registration but the school provides opportunities in the canteen for pupils to work independently from 7.45am. The school is not affiliated to any national or international organisation linked to the teachings of Sathya Sai Baba. The school has very recently applied to the Department for Education to become a free school. The last full inspection of the school was in December 2008 but there were emergency and progress monitoring inspections in July and December 2012 respectively.
