 Shafton is larger than the average-sized secondary school.  The proportion of disadvantaged students supported by pupil premium funding is well above average.  More students than average are supported at school action plus or have an education, health and care plan. The proportion of students supported at school action is high.  Almost all students are of White British heritage and there are few students learning English as an additional language.  No students from the school attend alternative provision.  The school has not met the government’s current floor standards, which are the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress.  No students will be entered early for GCSE examinations this year.  The headteacher at the time of the previous inspection left the school at Easter 2013 and her deputy took over as the acting principal.  The school is scheduled to become an academy on 1 February 2015, sponsored by the Outwood Grange Academy Trust. Representatives of the Trust have been working in the school since July.
