Silverstone University Technical College (UTC), which opened in September 2013, is a new centre of excellence for young people wanting to break into the specialist fields of High Performance Engineering and Business & Technical Events Management. It is based in the very heart of British Motorsport, at the Silverstone racing grounds, in a multi-million pound facility.

“Don't do it”

In my opinion as a current parent, this is no better than any other secondary. They do not study high performance engineering, have out-dated workshops. Don't do it – this school is more interested in Ofsted reports than its pupils. To the cost of the whole school.
“Overestimated”

They say that they are a good school yet the average for students recieving 5 A*-C is 36%, 17% below average. The teachers regulalry leave and then students just having cover teachers for months learning nothing. They ask for 5 A*-C for 6th form. No exceptions yet the reason many students aren't meeting the requirements are due to lack of teaching.
“The worst mistake”

I was in the first ever intake of students for Silverstone UTC and I can honestly say it was the worst mistake. I was promised great things from this school. To start with I was told I would be able to study French and was later told I couldn't do it and was made to take German instead. I was excited to take 'events management' but I spent the first year learning at a university standard because the course was taught by a university lecturer. I had learnt things at a higher lever but the teacher had missed out the lower level material meaning that me and my class mates all failed that year resulting in us, effectively, having to cram four years of work into 8 months with a new teacher.
There was little pastoral care for the first year of school and no school nurse, no one to talk to about our problems and no one to seek help/ advice from.

Teaching and school is terrible, in my opinion. At 18 you're not allowed to leave the building, so you spend from 9-5 stuck inside a small building.

First of all I am a student at this school who's just finished my GCSEs and are awaiting results. This school has taught me so much than the average school I came from a previous Daventry school that was very poor teaching and I hated the bullying there but this school has very good teaching standards and they always are there to help students who ask for help. I studied engineering and the staff are very helpful. Yes the course is mainly theory based, but you learn so much more at this school and when the practical is available the staff show you the technical way so you can meet the drawings tollerences. This school is a fantastic school with high discipline and high expectations that turn can our lives around. It certainly did mine.
“Very Professional”

As my son is about to join UTC in September, I was worried about the "poor teaching" comment. I have been assured by the deputy principal, that the current expected results are showing to be above national average. Also that the machinery is used as and when required, as opposed to a "factory-system". I phoned and left a message about my concerns one evening and was contacted the very next morning.
“Poor teaching”

In my opinion they have very poor teaching. My son failed his first year although the teachers said he had passed and we later found out he had not. He now has to do the equivalent of 2 years work in one year. Also this is not a practical based school, they have all the machines yet they sit in the classrooms doing written work.

2015 GCSE RESULTSImportant information for parents
Due to number of reforms to GSCE reporting introduced by the government in 2014, such as the exclusion of iGCSE examination results, the official school performance data may not accurately report a school’s full results. For more information, please see About and refer to the section, ‘Why does a school show 0% on its GSCE data dial? In many affected cases, the Average Point Score will also display LOW SCORE as points for iGCSEs and resits are not included.
Schools can upload their full GCSE results by registering for a School Noticeboard. All school results data will be verified.
