School Description

St Edward’s is an independent special school for boys aged nine to 18. It has been open since 1980, and is based in a Grade 2 listed building on a rural site in Hampshire. It has a distinct Catholic ethos and is affiliated to the Clifton Diocese. As a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), it has a board of governors that assumes overall responsibility for the school. Pupils all have an education, health and care plan based on their social, emotional and mental health needs. An increasing proportion of pupils arrive at the school with additional and more complex needs, such as very low literacy levels and/or specific Inspection report: St Edward’s School, 5–7 June 2018 Page 8 of 11 speech and language difficulties. A notable proportion of pupils have had a period of time away from formal education before joining the school. All of the pupils are referred by a relevant local authority, which funds their place at the school. There are currently pupils from 10 different local authorities who attend the school. Most travel to school daily, but a small proportion are accommodated in a boarding provision on the school site, which is registered and inspected separately. The school uses Sparsholt College as an alternative provider to support the range of courses offered to the very small number of pupils who stay on at the school in the sixth form.

“Good school - in need of a new Headmaster”

The staff at this school are generally amazing with a few exceptions. They care for your child and offer a lot of support to the parents. I think the headmaster is out of his depth, however. Homework is not offered unless the parents ask for it and the head of education also seems to also be out of her depth in my opinion. The school is a specialist therapeutic school for kids with diagnosed medical issues and generally is great but there are some who do not seem to grasp what this means. The person dealing with exam results was allowed to go away on holiday so that when GCSE results arrived we could not get them. We were told that they were posted because they did not think anyone would be interested in calling in for them. If your child goes here, make sure you keep on top of what happens in class to be sure they are getting what they need.

This School was the first and best school I have come across in the 4 yrs myself and Cambridge lea had been looking for regarding my son who had complex needs with Tourette syndrome and being on the autistic spectrum. This School is one of a kind and I consider myself and my son very lucky to have been placed there!! It was a long time ago now but it was the single most important thing that shaped my son to the person he is today and I don't want to think about the outcome if he didn't get this opportunity
