The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. You have established a warm, inviting ethos in this small school which sits at the heart of its community. You model high expectations effectively, and inspire staff to do their utmost to impact positively on the lives of pupils. Adults take great pride in knowing pupils as individuals; they consider carefully each pupil’s particular needs and interests. Pupils thoroughly enjoy their time here; their good attendance is testament to this. The large majority of parents and carers who responded to Ofsted’s survey or spoke to the lead inspector are confident that their children are happy, safe and well-looked after in your caring and capable hands. You and governors have tackled the areas identified for improvement at the previous inspection, successfully. Together with staff, you made changes to the curriculum, making sure that pupils have more opportunities to practise and apply their writing skills across subjects. Good-quality staff training, workshops for parents and adjustments to the teaching and learning of phonics enable children in the early years to get off to a good start in their writing endeavours. Pupils use increasingly adventurous vocabulary as they move through the school and write for a wide variety of purposes. Work in lessons, on display and in pupils’ books demonstrates that pupils in each key stage make good progress in writing. You have, however, noticed that some pupils do not use and apply increasingly complex spelling rules consistently, or sustain the quality of their work across subjects. You have quite rightly pinpointed aspects of spelling and presentation as areas for improvement.

“The best possible start”

"> My children are very happy at this school. All staff know each child individually and are caring and encouraging. Any problems are picked up quickly and in my experience staff go above and beyond to find appropriate solutions. The school is small and older pupils are actively encouraged to interact with the younger ones which teaches empathy and cooperation . I feel very fortunate that my children have such a great start to their school life at Stannington First School.
“Happy school”

"> I personally have been very happy with the school, both of my children are very happy therefore I am very happy. Obviously wherever there are groups of children disagreements and differences of opinions do occur with the children but I have always found they the school try to deal with it quickly and effectively. The headmistress I have found to be very personable and caring whenever I have had meetings regarding my children. I am very happy with Stannington School and would recommend it as a fantastic first school.
“Unimpressive”

"> The pupil to teacher ratio may be good but the quality of leadership for those teachers is extremely low. Pupils get on well with their form teachers but the head teacher has been known to publicly berate the children. Office management is minimal with favouritism. Late signing in differs depending on who you are... with some parents queuing to get in and some being made to sign in when others are not. Communication with parents regarding dates and times of events can change at a morning's notice showing a clear lack of planning. Reports of bullying are frowned upon as the head deems it as not occurring in the school.
