School Description

Pupils are very happy to attend this school. They enjoy their learning because teachers plan for pupils to work at their own pace. Pupils feel safe in school. Pupils are respectful to one another and to staff. Pupils have very good relationships with staff and know they can trust them. Staff have high expectations for all pupils. Pupils learn in school, in the forest and on weekly adventure days. This range of activities provides pupils with different ways to learn. However, leaders have not fully planned how all these activities combine to achieve their ambitious goals. This means that leaders and teachers are not clear what key things they want pupils to remember. Teachers know the pupils well and they plan lessons to meet pupils’ individual needs. Pupils are well behaved. Pupils aged three to 11 work together in mixed-age classes. Older pupils act as role models to the younger children. Some pupils are young leaders and they help others with their learning. Young leaders also read to younger children. Pupils say that bullying very rarely occurs. However, if it did occur, pupils know that they can tell a teacher and they are confident the teacher will resolve it.

“Incredible Progressive School”

FLS is a very special school, run by very special and highly dedicated staff. It’s a place where my daughter is very lucky to go and although I never thought I would pay for education, I couldn’t un-see what I saw when meeting the principal Julia Dunford, what an inspiring woman to lead a progressive and life changing independent school. Valuing above all, kindness, resilience, collaboration and nurturing our children to become the best humans they can be, and let’s face it the world really needs it right now. Ofsted have not got the same vision unfortunately and although the children spend half their week in outdoors learning environments, whether that’s in the forest, enjoying the beautiful London parks or on the roof terrace of the school, they see ‘lack of outdoor space’ and although the children are nurtured individually, in a way that inspires a love of learning and sees each child for who they are and what they need, Ofsted sees ‘unstructured curriculum’ even the inspectors visiting the school admitted that Ofsted does not work for progressive schools like FLS, although it is a model that everyone would choose for their children if they could, society is always about ticking boxes and fitting a mould which doesn’t work. The families of FLS see how special the school is and how our children have flourished (mine in just 2 years) it’s mind blowing and I can be almost certain she wouldn’t be as confident in who she is and her talents if we hadn’t taken this educational route. If you are looking for a personal, inspiring school for your child look no further, The Family Learning School is the place.
“Fantastic school”

My daughter has attended FLS for the past two years. She absolutely loves the school and tells me frequently that it's 'the best school in the world'. I have seen her confidence and self belief grow immeasurably and she has a real desire to learn. She engages well with all the different learning styles, whether that be the weekly adventure days (museums, horse riding etc.) and forest school or in the fantastic inside space (don't let the outside of the building fool you). The teachers are caring, passionate and expert and my daughter loves them all. We are so glad we sent our daughter here and are confident she will learn the life skills needed to be successful, independent and happy as an adult.
“A fabulous school which allows children to learn at their own pace.”

I'm a parent at this school and highly recommend it's progressive learning environment. Weekly forest school and adventure days engage the children with the wider environment, and small mixed-age class sizes allow children to learn when they are ready to do so. The FLS children have a strong sense of community, are intellectually curious, emotionally resilient, and are patient and kind with peers. I would recommend this school
