The Independent Grammar School:Durham Parent Reviews

Average Parent Rating

“First class”

First class teaching, engaged teachers who care, wonderful facilities and a strong ethos. I have two children attending and my third will follow when he is of age.
“Fantastic school”

IGS is a fantastic school. The staff get to know the pupils so well, and are able to support and encourage them to achieve and grow in confidence. As a parent, I am kept up to date regularly with important information about my daughter; not only about the progress she is making, but all of the wonderful things they are doing in school.
“Lovely family feel, high academic standards, a breath of fresh air in the academic sector!”

I am a parent of a child at this school. My son has thrived at this school and thoroughly enjoys forest school days and the wide range of after-school clubs. He has benefited from the specialist gymnastic and violin tuition offered. This school has a lovely family feel where staff promote and model the characteristic we want our son to develop such as compassion for others, kindness and forgiveness. Teachers plan interesting lessons which my son can’t wait to tell me about when he comes home. I couldn’t recommend this school highly enough.
“An Excellent School”

Since joining The Independent Grammar School, Durham, my grandson has flourished in the kind, nurturing and academic atmosphere which the school engenders. The staff put the welfare and education of the children first. It is a truly excellent school, and an example for all.
“A happy productive learning environment.”

The school is an exceptional example of educating children using approaches and methods that have been well thought through to ensure engagement, rather than ticking boxes to meet a curriculum target. This approach has made the transition into school seamless and a very enjoyable experience for my son.
“Exceptional education”

What a pleasure it is for me to see my grandson attending IGS Durham. Not only is he extremely happy to be a pupil there, but the quality of the education is superb. He has achieved so much during this time and is enjoying an education which is tailored to his potential and ability. It is wonderful to see him thriving academically but just as importantly, to know that he is encouraged to contribute to the happiness and wellbeing of those around him. I firmly believe that IGS will inspire my grandson to have a passion for learning, which hopefully, will last a lifetime.
“Great School”

Since joining The Independent Grammar School Durham our son has discovered enjoyment in learning. The approach the teachers have taken in understanding how he learns and encouraging deeper learning along with the variety of topics and opportunity has made for a happy boy. As parents we can’t speak more highly of the school. I have and will continue to recommend this school.
“The best we've seen”

IGS:Durham is a fantastic school. Our son had tried both state primary and independent prep schools but none was quite right. When we heard about this school we knew that it was what we had been looking for all along and our son is so happy there. The class sizes are small and have a mix of ages, the teaching is outstanding, the core values are positive, the atmosphere is calm and the setting is beautiful. The school embraces the trivium - grammar, logic and rhetoric - which means that the children learn the essentials of each subject, and thoroughly. This is rewarding because it creates confidence and a solid foundation for a love of learning. Since joining the school, our son reads more enthusiastically than ever. The school uses the National Curriculum as a resource, not a guide, because it believes leaning is not a tick-box exercise. The teaching is largely based on an exceptionally good resource - the Civitas ‘What Your Child Needs to Know’ books. These teach the ‘grammar’ of each subject. For example, in history, events are explained, not as isolated subjects, but in their chronological context. We had found that, too often, other schools taught subjects without establishing the fundamentals, and instead rushed through them to meet targets. There is no bullying at the school. Zero. The termly fees are very small compared with other independent schools because it invests in the most important thing of all – the teaching. There are no extra members of staff to pay for, such as secretaries, caterers, gardeners and caretakers. Every day, our son says he has enjoyed school. We wholeheartedly recommend IGS:Durham.
