The college, as a studio school, will eventually have a maximum number of learners of 300 and is much smaller than most secondary schools. The first learners were admitted to the college in September 2012; there are full year groups in Years 10 and 11. There are 12 learners in the sixth form now, but the number will increase significantly from September 2014. Learners follow a reduced curriculum that includes English, mathematics, double science, information and communication technology (ICT) and one of three vocational areas: engineering, business or health and social care. Studio schools also have their own special curriculum linking learning to enterprise projects in the community and providing one day each week of practical work experience on employers’ premises. The proportion of girls in the college is lower than in most secondary schools. An average proportion of learners are eligible for the pupil premium, extra government funding because they are entitled to free school meals or for other reasons. The proportion of learners from minority ethnic backgrounds is lower than average and very few learners do not speak English as their first language. The proportion of disabled students and those who have special educational needs supported at school action level is very high. The same is true for the proportion supported at school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs. The first set of published examination results will be available for the college after the present Year 11 has sat GCSE examinations in the summer of 2014, so it is not possible to compare it to the current government minimum standards. The college is a sponsored academy under the Midland Academy Trust. It is federated with the Midland Studio College (Nuneaton) which opened in September 2013 and the Executive Principal oversees both colleges. Some learners follow parts of their courses at the North Warwickshire and Hinckley College or benefit from specialist vocational teaching provided by the college.
