The college opened as a studio school in September 2013. It currently has learners in Years 10 and 11. It is much smaller than most secondary schools. Learners follow an alternative curriculum that includes English, mathematics, double science, information and communication technology (ICT) and one of two vocational areas – engineering, or business and enterprise. Studio schools also have their own special curriculum linking learning to enterprise projects and the explicit development of employability skills, including one day each week of practical work experience on employers’ premises. An average proportion of learners are supported by the pupil premium, which is extra government funding that the college receives for learners who are known to be eligible for free school meals or who are looked after by the local authority. The proportion of learners from minority ethnic backgrounds is lower than average and very few learners speak English as an additional language. The proportion of disabled learners and those who have special educational needs is well above average. The first set of published examination results will be available for the college after the present Year 11 has taken GCSE examinations in the summer of 2015, so it is not possible to compare college data with the government’s current minimum standards. The college is a sponsored academy under the Midland Academies Trust. It is federated with the Midland Studio College (Hinckley) which opened in September 2012. The Executive Principal leads both colleges. Some learners in Year 11 attend off-site provision at the premises of one of the following organisations: Shaftesbury Young People; Positive about Young People; or North Warwickshire and Hinckley College.
