The school is an above average-sized secondary school. It includes boarding provision for 52 students. The proportion of students from minority ethnic backgrounds, including those who speak English as an additional language, is below average. The proportion of disabled students and those who have special educational needs supported through school action is below average, as is the proportion supported through school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs. The proportion of students known to be eligible for the pupil premium, which provides additional funding for students in local authority care, those known to be eligible for free school meals and others, is below average. The school meets the government’s current floor standards for secondary schools, which set the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress. The school makes use of local businesses as part of its weekly work experience programme for a very small number of Key Stage 4 students. Recent tragic circumstances in the mathematics department led to a great deal of staff disruption. The acting headteacher, who was the deputy headteacher, has been in post since September 2013.
