Local Independent School The Webber, has been a hive of activity this year as they settle in resident bees and launch an Eco Bee Club to help inspire active learning and improve the local economy.
Working alongside local business Home Farm MK, Headmistress Hilary Marsden and Mr Adrian Dumbleton introduced a bee hive on the school grounds alongside the Eco Garden where nursey to Year 11 students grow and tend to their own fruit and vegetables for the school kitchen and use the space for learning in Science, Art, Geography and Wellbeing lessons.
Mrs Marsden told us “Here at Webber, we aim to instill a lifelong curiosity and love of learning within every one of our students. The best way to discover what’s on offer is to experience the ‘buzz’ of our super learning environment for yourself.
Who/what inspired you to become a teacher?
Since I was a wee person and being an only child I have always loved books and 'teaching' in my imaginary world! I would line up my dolls and teddies in a semicircle to be 'taught' at my play school. My working class family background placed real value on reading, public libraries and learning. I even had a little library at home and my toys were read to and had their own library card to take out books and they even got fines if they brought their books back late! The Girl Guiding, Scouting and Duke of Edinburgh's Award all moulded me as a teenager creating a love of working collaboratively, leading and learning as a team to have agency and impact. Combined with this I followed my passion for literature and stories studying for a Joint Honours MA in English Literature and Modern History and then on to take my PGCE.
What achievement are you most proud of as Head?
Building and working with a fantastic team of professionals at Webber over the last 13 years to develop a school we are all really proud to be part of.
What does a successful school look like to you?
A school which puts the child at the centre of all we do every day and never stops learning and reflecting on how we can be better.
What is the most important quality you want every child to have when they leave your school? And why?
A passion for lifelong learning. We are preparing our children and young people for a journey not a destination and for a future that is changing at incredible speed. If we can inspire and spark within our children a thirst and love of learning this will hold them in good stead as they grow and journey onwards.
Please give 5 words to describe the ethos of your school.
Achieving, Excellence, Together, Kindness and Individualised.
