This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

The school is much smaller than the average-sized primary school. The executive headteacher was appointed in September 2017. At the same time, the school entered into an informal partnership with another local school where the executive headteacher fulfils a similar role. Both schools retain separate governing bodies. There is one full-time newly qualified teacher. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is below the national average. The proportion of pupils with SEND is below the national average. The proportion of pupils who have an education, health and care plan is above the national average. Most pupils are of White British heritage. Inspection report: Thorndon Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, 19 to 20 June 2019 Page 9 of 11 Information about this inspection The inspector observed learning in 11 lessons or parts of lessons, some jointly with the executive headteacher. The inspector listened to pupils read and talked with them about their reading. He met with a group of pupils from key stage 2 and spoke with pupils informally in lessons and around the school. He met with the executive headteacher, the head of school, who is also the leader of English, the leader of mathematics and the early years leader. The inspector met with the SENCO who shares the responsibility with the executive headteacher. He also spoke with other teachers, including the newly qualified teacher, and other support staff. The inspector met with a group of governors, including the chair of governors. He met with a representative of the local authority. He met with parents at the start of the day and considered 29 responses to Ofsted’s online survey, Parent View. He also considered 28 free-text responses. There were no responses to the online staff and pupils’ surveys. The inspector considered a wide range of documentation, including the school’s improvement plan and self-evaluation summary, the school’s current information on pupils’ attainment and progress, attendance records, behaviour and bullying logs, external reports on the work of the school, monitoring records of teaching and learning and a range of documents relating to safeguarding. He also scrutinised minutes of meetings of the governing body and their record of visits to the school.
