School Description

The University Technical College (UTC) Plymouth opened in September 2013. The UTC aims to provide technical education and the skills and knowledge required for employment. The UTC serves pupils aged 14 to 19 and is much smaller than the average-sized secondary school. It is located on the site of the former Parkside Community College. Considerable refurbishment and development took place before the school was opened. The majority of pupils currently on roll are male. The vast majority of pupils speak English as their first language. The proportion of pupils with a statement of special educational needs or an education, health and care plan is above the national average. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils eligible for the pupil premium is above the national average. (The pupil premium provides additional funding for pupils who are known to be eligible for free school meals and children in the care of the local authority.) The UTC’s main sponsor is Plymouth University. The UTC also has links with the Royal Navy and partnerships with a wide range of employers in the local area. The school does not use alternative provision. The principal took up her post on 1 March 2016, having previously been acting principal from December 2015. Significant changes to leadership roles were made from January 2016. The school website does not currently meet requirements on the publication of information about the curriculum, school performance and the evaluation of the impact of funding for disadvantaged pupils. Some policy documents are difficult to locate or have not been reviewed. Inspection report: UTC Plymouth, 26–27 April 2016 7 of 10 The school did not meet the government’s floor standards in 2015. The floor standards are the minimum expectations for attainment and progress at the end of key stage 4. The school receives advisory support from the Baker Dearing Educational Trust.

"> The BTEC Level 3 is a practical qualification for hands on learning. Being a part of this college has given me many of opportunities as an engineering student, as the college is affiliated with many local Engineering Businesses aswell as the Royal Navy. Many opportunities such as The Green Power Team, Engineering Education Sceme, Field Gun Competition, Go-Cart Racing, And Many Science Technology Engineering Maths (STEM) events have occurred or we have been invited to. This college is very ‘Women in Stem’ forward, always encouraging diversity and Equality in a male oriented work environment. There are still improvements to be made, however one day it will be an amazing college, definitely an opportunity I’m glad I took.

"> Fantastic mix of vocational and technical education with inspiring teachers. My son went here in sixth form and was really well looked after.
“An honest truth from a student: UTC Plymouth”

"> The fact that I managed to get on to a computer that can log on and have the internet is a miracle, not only is there a complete lack of their so called "state of the art IT systems", the dwindling amount of teachers and staff left is growing ever smaller with 9 gone so far in addition to the head teacher. As well as 3 planned to leave at Christmas, which means that an unacceptably large amount of our lessons go untended by the teachers. This is absurd considering I am a year 13 doing a B-TEC and have more than enough deadlines to meet as it is, without the lack of any kind of learning support. The school was set up in 2013, receiving a very large grant for all of the very expensive machinery which sits idle for most of the week. Attempting to get as many students as they could get, they spun some half-truths about being treated like equals and having access to personal tablets which would have had all the necessary programs on them, however due to their abuse from the year before me that was cancelled this was not conveyed to any of us for half a year. As a result of the school having to take in any students to remain open, we have ended up with some degenerates which have been kicked out from their last school, they have taken it to be their goal in life to destroy any and all laptops or machinery that they can get their hands on. As a direct result of this the punish blanket is taken out and everyone gets punished for the acts of a few miscreants, and all of the laptops which are the only way B-TEC students can continue working outside of lessons were taken away a for two full weeks, this meant that everyone fell behind and more empty threats were made. How can a school full of engineering teachers not see the consequences of their own actions and then blame the students? Very easily apparently. There is an unhealthy amount of security seemingly aimed at keeping the students absolutely captivated. I have come to this conclusion because there is not key pad on the inside forcing students to reach around the gate and struggle to locate the button. Is this really necessary for a place which supposedly treats students like adults? If you or your son/daughter is thinking of attending UTC Plymouth I can only offer you this advice: If you have read this review and still think this is the school for you, go for it. Yours sincerely An exasperated UTC Plymouth survivor (so far)
