School Description

This is an average-sized school. Most pupils are of White British heritage with a much smaller proportion than average from minority ethnic backgrounds. Very few of these are new to speaking English. More than two thirds of pupils attending the school are from families serving in the armed forces, based nearby at RAF Wittering. Consequently, there is very high mobility of pupils throughout the school year. The proportion of pupils known to be eligible for a free school meal is very low. The proportion of pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is below average, although the number with a statement of special educational needs is average. The school has Healthy Schools status. At the time of the inspection three teachers were on maternity leave. The headteacher is retiring later this year; his successor has recently been appointed.

"> As it stands, I believe this is the best school in the area. Being a child of the RAF gives the children no special privilages as the previous view dictates. The teachers are well-informed and understand the needs of the children. They keep them engaged. The school promotes healthy eating, good manners and an eagerness to learn in the children. The parents are kept well-informed of all the events and studies across the years, and the head teacher seems to have a great rapport with the kids.

"> Not good at all in my opinion. Most RAF parents will say otherwise but it has been my experience that the majority of parents I speak to who are not military have had issues of one kind or another. There are the obvious things that everyone is aware of such as school houses/teams are named after fighter jets and lots of war-themed stuff being drummed into them, which is understandable, as the majority of children have parents in the RAF so they obviously cater more for them but the more subtle and worrying things, which I won't mention here, can be somewhat disturbing. I want to change schools but have now read that there will be a new headteacher so maybe things will change. I have lots of unresolved problems with the current one, my kids can't stand him, neither can we! Would give zero stars if that were an option.
