School Description

Ysgol Cwmgors is a primary school situated in Neath Port Talbot serving the local village. It is a traditional Welsh school, providing the curriculum in the Foundation Phase and key stage 1 entirely through the medium of Welsh and introducing English as both a subject and as a means of delivering some of the curriculum in key stage 2. There are 49 pupils on roll between the ages of four and 11 years and seven part-time nursery pupils. There are three classes, one for Nursery to Year 2 pupils, one for Year 3 and Year 4 pupils, and another for Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. Forty per cent of pupils come from homes where Welsh is spoken. Four per cent of pupils are from a minority ethnic background. The school describes its catchment area as generally neither prosperous nor economically disadvantaged. Nevertheless, 25% of pupils are registered to receive a free school meal which is higher than the local authority and national average. Nineteen per cent of pupils are identified as having additional learning needs (ALN); this is around the national average. There are no pupils with statements of special educational needs. The 2010-2011 individual school budget per pupil for Ysgol GGD Cwmgors is £5,361 which compares with a maximum of £7,911 and a minimum of £2,843 for primary schools in Neath Port Talbot. The school has the seventh highest budget per pupil out of the 71 primary schools in Neath Port Talbot. The headteacher has been in post since 1994, initially as an acting head.
