This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

School Description

Ysgol Bodfeurig is a happy and welcoming community where pupils and staff treat each other with care and kindness. The inclusive and family ethos ensures that almost all pupils are happy and feel safe. The oldest pupils support the younger ones carefully, building strong social skills. The headteacher sets a clear strategic direction for the school. Robust self-improvement procedures are in place, which enable improvements in provision for pupils' wellbeing and progress. As a result, most pupils make good progress in their literacy, numeracy and digital skills. Leaders promote the Welsh language and ensure that pupils develop their literacy skills successfully in formal and informal situations. Staff place a strong emphasis on Welsh culture which supports pupils to feel proud of their bilingual skills. Most pupils speak with visitors and peers naturally. They develop their reading skills robustly and show enjoyment when immersing themselves in different texts. Most pupils develop into confident and mature writers in Welsh. However, there are not enough purposeful opportunities for pupils to develop their English writing skills constructively over time. Staff use the learning environment effectively to motivate pupils, providing appropriate support and challenge. Almost all pupils show positive attitudes to their learning and show pride in their work. Teachers provide regular opportunities for pupils to develop their skills independently across the curriculum. At times, over-leadership by staff slows down the ability of the youngest pupils to develop their independent and creative learning skills. Leaders and staff work closely with governors, parents and the local community to provide stimulating and engaging experiences for pupils. The headteacher acquires the views of parents and responds proactively and in a timely manner to the findings. As a result, a strong sense of trust, pride and respect penetrates valuably across the school’s close-knit community.
