This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

The school’s robust leadership and conscientious staff nurture pupils’ well-being, care and support highly effectively. They know the pupils well and have a sound understanding of the school’s strengths and areas for improvement. With this information, they set about improving provision conscientiously and ensure that there is a close-knit community throughout the school. By doing so, and through the homely and inclusive sense that is created, pupils demonstrate positive attitudes to their learning. A strong feature of teaching and learning is the way in which pupils develop robust oral skills during their time at the school. Pupils also foster a love of reading purposefully and most are confident readers by the end of their time at the school. Teachers plan appropriate opportunities for pupils to use their core skills, such as their literacy, numeracy and digital skills, across the curriculum. Although there are good examples of these opportunities, which develop most pupils’ skills soundly, there are not enough regular opportunities for them to build on their numeracy, digital and extended writing skills, in general. The working relationship between teachers and pupils is a strength and the care, support and guidance they provide for pupils are very effective. All staff interact highly effectively with pupils and each other, which creates a productive learning environment. This supports pupils to foster enthusiasm towards their learning successfully. Teachers work diligently to ensure that most activities engage pupils’ interest and give them useful feedback and support, on the whole. However, at times, teachers provide pupils with too much guidance, which hinders their ability to develop their independent learning skills and not all tasks succeed in challenging pupils to achieve to the best of their ability.

“Simply the best”

Being a former student of Ysgol Bro Cernyw and having 5 of my nieces and nephews attend this brilliant school. What I have learnt is, more than anything it gives you a chance to follow your dream, be you academic or not... By giving you a chance to learn in our beautiful native language, to learn that the School is nit just important but essential and is a part of our wonderful Welsh community. My eldest nephew has become an Agricultural Engineer albeit a dyslexic and struggled with Arithmetic Languages but still he managed to do well in School and went to Glyn Llifon and now working full time locally. My niece has just achieved a 1st in her Masters in Structural and Civil Engineering and now working in full time employment as Engineer with Bam Nuttall. My youngest nephew has just finished his Degree in Architecture at Lincoln University. All where given a brilliant start and academic and social foundations at this wonderful School. At the moment my 2 youngest nieces attend Ysgol Bro Cernyw and both are developing their skills and I know one day, they will get to follow their dreams and leave their stamp on this big World.... Thank you.... both past and present Teachers, staff and Headteachers for doing a brilliant job and for giving them a chance.....
