This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Ysgol Gymuned Bryngwran is an inclusive learning community that ensures that the wellbeing, care and happiness of all pupils is an integral part of the school's Welsh ethos. Pupils' innate pride towards their school is very evident, with a strong sense of belonging to one family being a distinctive element of the school community. One of the school’s most prominent qualities is the way in which staff nurture and maintain pupils' personal and social skills through a variety of timely arrangements and innovative support programmes. Supportive working relationships between pupils and staff ensure that they know who to turn to for help and support. Most pupils make consistent progress in a good range of skills from their starting points, by making sound progress in their reading and digital skills by the end of their time at the school. The creative experiences for fostering pupils' artistic and expressive skills are a strong feature of the provision. A creative, broad and balanced curriculum is provided which builds coherently on pupils' understanding of their skills effectively. Teachers are influential language models and they plan a good range of meaningful and rich learning experiences that reflect the nature and local context of the school successfully. Pupils have regular opportunities to suggest ideas as part of the learning activities. However, teachers do not provide learning experiences that challenge the most able pupils regularly enough. Staff know all pupils well and meet the needs of different groups of pupils purposefully. They use an appropriate range of questioning methods effectively to support pupils' understanding as well as guide the direction of their learning. However, teachers do not provide pupils with feedback that is effective enough to support them to identify the next steps in their learning. Members of the governing body support the headteacher and staff appropriately. Regular evaluations by the headteacher and governing body create an appropriate picture of the school's strengths and areas for improvement. Staff have a productive relationship with the neighbouring primary and secondary schools, which facilitates effective transition arrangements. The headteacher and staff foster proactive partnerships with parents and the local community which contribute significantly to the welcoming and family ethos.
