Ysgol Tan y Marian is a community school for pupils aged seven to eleven. It is situated on the outskirts of Old Colwyn, in the County Borough of Conwy. Nearly all pupils who attend the school are from the local area, where there are significant levels of social and economic disadvantage. Around 55% of pupils are entitled to free school meals, which is significantly above local authority and national averages. Currently, the school has 56 pupils on roll, who are taught in two mixed-age classes. The number on roll has fallen substantially since the last inspection. A local authority unit resource base, for pupils with additional learning needs, is located in the school. Most of the pupils attending the unit are from Ysgol Tan Y Marian. All pupils are of white British ethnic origin and all speak English as their first language. No pupil speaks Welsh at home. Currently, there are no pupils ‘looked after’ by the local authority. End of key stage 1 assessments show that a high percentage of pupils achieve significantly below national averages when they transfer to the school. The school identifies around 59% of its pupils as having additional learning needs, which is much higher than the national average. Three pupils have a statement of special educational needs. The individual school budget per pupil for Ysgol Iau Tan y Marian in 2011-2012 means that the budget is £6,493 per pupil. The maximum per pupil in the primary schools in Conwy is £13,941 and the minimum is £2,935. Ysgol Iau Tan y Marian is ninth out of the 61 primary schools in Conwy in terms of its school budget per pupil. During the inspection, the school was led by a senior member of staff who had undertaken the role of acting headteacher in September 2011.
