School Description

Ysgol Pen Coch is a day special school situated in Flint and maintained by Flintshire County Council. The school provides education for pupils aged from 2 to 11 years with a wide range of special educational needs including moderate, severe and profound learning difficulties, communication disorders, challenging behaviour and autistic spectrum disorders. A few pupils have additional physical and sensory impairments. Currently, there are 93 pupils on roll. All pupils have a statement of special educational needs. Around 30% of the pupils are eligible for free school meals and a very few are looked after (LAC) by their local authority. English is the main language of nearly all pupils. No pupils speak Welsh as a first language at home. A very few pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds. The headteacher has been in post since the school opened in 2009. The senior management team has been in place since 2016. The school was last inspected in 2011. Ysgol Pen Coch is currently a ‘curriculum pioneer‘. This means that it is working with the Welsh Government and other curriculum pioneer schools to develop and pilot a new curriculum for Wales. The school is also a ‘New Deal pioneer’ and is working with the Welsh Government and other New Deal pioneers to develop a national model of professional learning.
