School Description

Ysgol Y Faenol, a Church in Wales voluntary controlled school, is situated in Penrhosgarnedd, not far from the city of Bangor. It operates the Gwynedd Local Authority (LA) language policy. The pre-inspection documents suggest that there isn't a high percentage of pupils that are disadvantaged or socially deprived and they represent the full range of ability. Four per cent of the pupils have been registered as being entitled to receive free school meals. This is substantially lower than the LA average of 12.8% and the all Wales percentage of 17.5%. Some 10% of pupils come from homes where Welsh is the main language. Up to 25% come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Results of baseline assessment at the school are around the county average. Currently, there are 233 pupils between reception age and year (Y) 6 on the school's register. In line with the LA policies, pupils are accepted into the school on a full-time basis in the September following their fourth birthday. Children are accepted into the nursery on a part-time basis in the September following their third birthday; currently, 29 children attend the school on a part-time basis each morning. Twelve pupils have been identified as having special educational needs (SEN), including nine on school action plus and three who hold statements for SEN. Twenty-four pupils at the school receive learning support with English as an additional language. No pupil at the school is in the care of the LA. There are 10 full-time teachers at the school as well as the headteacher. In addition, there is one part-time teacher. There are 10 classes at the school, including the nursery class. Pupil numbers have risen slightly since the school was last inspected in November 2004. The individual school budget per pupil for Ysgol Y Faenol in 2010-2011 is £2718 which compares with a maximum of £8442 and a minimum of £2717 for primary schools in Gwynedd. The school has the 102nd highest budget per pupil of the 102 primary schools in Gwynedd.

Pupil Level Annual School Census 2019

Pupil heat map key

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the Pupil Level Annual School Census collected by the Welsh Government. The data tells us where pupils lived at the time of the last Pupil Census (released annually in July).

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The areas from which pupils are admitted to a school can change from year to year to reflect the number of siblings and pupils admitted under high priority admissions criteria.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the last School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

See Pupil heat maps FAQs for more information about the source of pupil heat map data.
